During 2006-2009, the research activities of Department of Sustainable Development of the Faculty of European Studies and Regional Development were focused on testing of yield and energetic potentials of fast growing willow (Salix) in semidry soil-climatic conditions of the southwest Slovakia. The research was realized on the base of bilateral contract cooperation between the Lantmännen Agroenergi AB in Oerebro (Sweden) and the Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra. Field trials were established on two research sites: Selice and Kolíňany. According to this classification the area belongs to very dry and very hot lowland climatic region. The air mean temperature sum T mote than 10 deg C with annual mean air temperature 9.7 deg C. Soils are characterized as carbonated fluvisoils, light in the whole profile, easy drying, without skeleton, deep (60 cm and more). According to the texture they are classified as sandy or sandy-loam soils. Precipitation total (1951-2000) is 566.3 mm with small number of days with snow cover. Second site: air mean temperature sum T great than 10 deg C with annual mean air temperature 9.8 deg C. Mean air temperature during growing season range between 15-17 deg C. Soils are characterized as gleyic fluvisoils, without skeleton, deep (60 cm and more). According to the texture they are classified as loamy soils. Precipitation total (1951-2000) is 547.6 mm with the small number of days with snow cover. Relatively high level of groundwater was observed on the site. Five Swedish varieties of energetic willow (Salix): Inger, Tora, Sven, Tordis and Gudrun were planted on both research sites...
