The project consists of a mine and refinery with a capacity of 830,000 tons of potassium chloride (equivalent to 500,000 tons of potash). The mine and refinery will be only about 30 miles from Pointe Noire and will be linked by a short spur to the existing Brazzaville-Pointe Noire railroad. The existing port at Pointe Noire cannot handle carriers exceeding about 18,000 tons DW and the project will accordingly include a loading pier 3 km southeast of Pointe Noire which will be able to accommodate bulk carriers of about 65,000 tons DW. Commercial operations are expected to begin in early 1969.
