Economic and sector work program for sub-Saharan Africa : FY 95

This is the fifth annual catalogue of the Africa Region's program of economic and sector work (ESW), and it is unique, in that it contains a task-by-task description of the program. Detailed entries are preceded by a descriptive, graphic, and statistical introduction to the program. Since this is a transition year for the Region, having undergone organizational changes, the on-going reevaluation of the program may lead to recasting this compendium next year. Even though this volume follows the shape of previous ones, three exceptions are worth noting: 1) it de-emphasizes written outputs, considered less related to the activities' impact; 2) it pays less attention to the originating units; and, 3) it makes a clear distinction between those tasks carried over from last year as opposed to this year's, considering the new tasks more representative of the current and evolving approach to ESW. The main features include a sharp drop in the size of the program, together with task consolidation and a greater country concentration and focusing of most studies. Furthermore, it emphasizes activities maximizing the development impact, with special attention to lessons learned, both in Africa and elsewhere.
