Analyzing of maize breeding materials for development of drought tolerant hybrids in south Viet Nam

Evaluation of 62 maize inbred lines as breeding materials for drought tolerant hybrid development with 8 PCR (polymerase chaine reaction) has been undertaken. Phenotype evaluation on the field with two water regimes showed significant differences in important traits among inbred lines such as: grain yield, growth duration, plant height, ear height. 8 SSR (simple sequence repeat) markers revealed a total of 21 alleles in 62 inbred lines with an average of 2.63 alleles per loci. Primer umc 1354 on chromosome 1 showed highest number of alleles in the investigation (5 alleles). The dendogram of genetic diversity grouped 62 inbred lines into 4 distant groups. These will be the basis for further process in using the breeding materials most efficiently.
