Epidemiological aspects of the control and prevention of malignant catarrhal fever in Indonesia

Sheep-associated malignant catarrhal fever in an important disease of Bali cattle (Bos javanicus) and swamp buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) in Indonesia. Current control measures are based on maintaining large ruminants separated from sheep. In a study designed to elucidate aetiological and epidemiology factors, sheep to Bali cattle transmission has been established, the disease has been maintained by blood transmissions, retroviruses have been isolated from natural cases in buffalo and preliminary serological studies with bovine herpesvirus 3 and a retrovirus have been carried out. The criteria of establishing a histological diagnosis have been determined and this will assist field veterinarians in diagnosing the disease and aid in an understanding of the epidemiology
