The U.S. Army Environmental Hygiene Agency's Sanitary Engineer is tasked with making decisions in a wide making decisions in a wide variety of water and wastewater treatment areas. To assist him in two of these areas, this project was undertaken with an objective of developing some computer tools with the engineer in mind. Estimation of a wastewater treatment plant's capability to cope with an increased load due to a post's expansion is the first area. Given the approximate character of the wastewater resulting from a post's expansion, a steady-state model of the treatment process is used to predict the character of the treatment plant's effluent. Some guidance is thus provided to the engineer in determining the present treatment scheme's ability to provide adequate treatment after expansion. The other area in which aid is provided is in the direction and analysis of the water quality engineering special study or survey. Utilizing design and operational data, a computer model evaluates the operational characteristics of the system. Evaluation may be accomplished with operational data available before the survey and with the data generated by the survey. Operational characteristics calculated are then used by the engineer to evaluate the system's operational condition and to then plan and conduct the survey.
