Studies on using different substrate mixes for producing green onion
2011
Hamed, W.R.
This study was carried out in Arid Land Agricultural graduate studies and Research Institute (ALARI), Faculty of Agriculture-Ain Shams University, Shobra El- Khema, Qalyobia, Egypt during winterSeasons of 2007 and 2008 under open field conditions. The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility of using substrate culture to produce green onion (Allium cepa) cv. Giza 20. Also, determine the most suitable substrate mixture for producing green onion with high yield and Quality. Different substrates mixtures; (1) perlite (Pr), (2) mixture of sand rice husk 1:1 v/v (SRh), (3) mixture of sand peanut shells 1:1 v/v (SPn), (4) mixture of sand: rice husk : peanut shells 1:1:1 v/v/v (SRhPn) and (5)mixture of peat moss: perlite 1: 1 v/v (PePr) have been tested during this study in relation to growth and yield of green onion (Allium cepa) cv Giza 20. Different measurements were recorded throughout the experimental time it were: plant height, number of leaves, total yield fresh weights (Kg/ m2), total yield dry weights (Kg/ m2), white base diameter,Neck diameter, N.P.K%, Chlorophyll content, total Carbohydrate (%) and Fibers %. The experiment was designed as complete randomized with three replicates. Results illustrated that SRh mix (sand: rice husk 1:1 v/v recorded the highest values regarding plant length, number of leaves, total yield fresh and dry weights, white base diameter, neck diameter and total carbohydrates while, SPn mix (sand: peanut shells 1:1 v/v) recorded the lowest values regarding plant length, number of leaves, total yield fresh, dry weights, white base diameter and neck diameter. On the other hand, there were no significant differences among treatments regarding P%, K% and chlorophyll content. Furthermore, SPn mix recorded the highest fiber%, while Perlite substrate recorded the lowest fiber%. It could be concluded that the best substrate mixture for producing green onion was Sand: rice husk 1: 1 v/v (SRh).
