The study on development assistance in water sectors: response to water problems in developing countries

This paper reports on works carried out by JICA’s Study Group on Development Assistance in Water Sectors on classifying issues in each water sector and reviewing Japan’s performance of assistance.The five special priority areas of assistance and cooperation pointed out are:comprehensive water management in monsoon Asiaconservation of the regional environments by water pollution preventative measuressustainable provision and impartial allocation of agriculture watersafe water supply in arid areas and for the poorstrengthening of assistance to international river basin managementRecommendations for the promotion of efficient water use (water conservation and technological development in agricultural, industrial and domestic sector):promotion of efficient water useassistance in establishing legal-institutional systemimportance of regional diversityconsideration for the socially vulnerable, the poor and gender issuespromotion of a multi-sector approach strengthening mechanism for participationcollaborative assistancestrengthening domestic organisationutilisation of Japan’s experiences and technology developmentSpecific methods for assistance and cooperation are also explained.
