Arctic knowledge: local perceptions of social and environmental change

How do people living in the Arctic view dramatic and large scale environmental change? Can they use indigenous knowledge to empower themselves? Crucially, how far is this knowledge integrated into environmental policymaking? Research by the University of Cambridge examines how indigenous peoples in northeastern Siberia cope with the rapid pace of environmental and social change. It looks at the Siberian use of Alaska as a model for guiding its own development, such as diverting taxation on resource-extraction industries to support a local cultural and environmental agenda.
