Presents a basket of research opportunities specific to reducingpoverty in Africa, South Asia and South East Asia. It reviews the role of livestock in poverty reduction, and focuses on the constraints that animal diseases impose on the effective use of livestock by the poor. The authors attack the problem from two directions:they rank the importance of different diseases to the poor, through a series of regional workshops in Africa, South Asia and South East Asia. they engage experts in the specific diseases to synthesise the major research opportunities to reduce or eliminate these disease constraints, including through the development of vaccines, genetic resistance mechanisms, diagnostics, and a better understanding of disease epidemiology and impact. Armed with this information, the authors present a setof research priorities, grouped into three mechanisms for poverty reduction, namely securing the assets of the poor, improving the productivity and production efficiency of their livestock resources, and enhancing market opportunities for livestock products.
