Production and evaluation of sunflower hybrids
2007
Nabipour, A
In order to determine the combining abilities of sunflower inbred lines produced in the Department of Oilseed Crops Breeding, SPIl, Iran, 13 restorer and 2 cytoplasmic male sterile lines were crossed in a factorial manner which resulted in 26 sunflower hybrids. In spring of 2006, these hybrids were planted in a complete block design arrangement, at the experimental farm of SPIl, and days to flowering, days to maturity, plant height, stem and capitol diameter, number of leaves, oil percentage, 1000 seed weight, leaf size and plot yield were recorded. Analysis of variance revealed significant differences among the hybrids as well as hybrids and parents. Effects of lines and testers on the relevant hybrids were significant for all of the studied traits. For some of traits including plot yield, the overall heterosis was significant and for these and other traits at least one of the crosses showed outstanding heterosis. When considering the two male sterile lines, CMSb showed higher heterosis for most of traits which implies that the alleles this line carries forloei controlling these traits is different from those of the Iranian inbred tines. However, as per its low general combining ability, hybrids involving this CMS line don't render high yield. Therefore, use of this line in hybrid breeding programs would promise finding hybrids with good structure but with moderate yield.
