According to the Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC all water bodies in Latvia must achieve at least good water ecological quality status until 2015. Aim of this study was to estimate biological diversity of macrophyte vegetation and assess ecological quality of Garezeri Lakes by using macrophytes as biological indicators. Highest number of macrophyte taxa was obtained in Dienvidu Garezers Lake, but highest biological diversity – in Ziemeļu Garezers Lake. Estonian macrophyte assessment method as well as ESMI displayed that Garezeri Lakes have good ecological quality, although results are not unequivocal. To ensure more detail exposition on this issue, further research include analyses of more macrophyte metrics and analyses of environmental factors, to estimate their influence on macrophyte species composition and occurrence.
