This article focuses on two themes: (1) critical analysis of the formulation of emigration as a political issue and a research problem, and (2) suggestion of an alternative vision on the basis of ethnographic research in the rural areas of Latvia. The main tenet of the article is the following argument: at present in the predominating discourses of migration and demography, a whole totality of complex and dynamic phenomena is reduced to a problem of emigration of a national scope which is measured by applying statistical correlations. As a result, the political and scientific discourses marginalize the questions which are of real significance to people and which in the article are referred to using the concept of ''a livable life''.
