Impact of phosphorus and potassium on the growth and yield of wheat cv. Mehran-89

Study was carried out at Sindh Agriculture University, Tandojam during 2007-2008In to evaluate the effect of various phosphorus and potassium fertilization rates on the growth and seed yield of wheat. Experimental soil was treated with 0-0, 30-0, 30-30, 60-30, 60-60, 90-30, 90-60 and 90-90 kg P-K per ha, respectively. The soil fertilized with 90-30 kg P-K per ha resulted maximum values for plant height (84.05 cm), number of tillers (6.36 per plant), spike length (10.85 cm), number of grains (66.33 per spike), seed index (48.38 g) and grain yield (4504.33 kg per ha). Statistically, the differences in values for all the characters related to crop growth, grain yield and plant P or K contents were non-significant between 90-30, 90-60 and 90-90 kg P-K per ha. While analyzing the increase percent in growth and grain yield components in treated plots over control, it was observed that 90-30 kg P-K per ha treatment resulted an increase of 103.11% in plant height, 97.51% in tillers per plant, 90.01% in spike length, 84.04% in number of grains per spike, 92.82 % in seed index and 115.89 % in grain yield per ha over control.
