'Baegjinju' is a new japonica rice cultivar developed from 'Ilpumbyeo' mutation lines as N-methyl-N-nitrosourea (MNU) treatment on fertilized egg cell by the rice breeding team of National Crop Experiment Station, R.D.A in 2001. This variety has about 136 days of growth duration from transplanting to harvesting in central plain area of Korea. It has a good semi-elect plant type and resistance to lodging with strong culm. The number of panicles/hill of 'Baegjinju' is a more than that of 'Hwaseongbyeo', and milled rice of that shows dull and medium short grain. It has very low amylose content (9.1%) and similar gelatinization temperature and good palatability of cooked brown and milled rice compared with 'Hwaseongbyeo'. This rice variety has slow leaf senescence and considerably tolerance to viviparous germination during the ripening stage. 'Baegjinju' is susceptible to leaf blast, bacterial blight, virus diseases and insect pest. The yield performance of this cultivar in milled rice is about 5.18 MT/ha by ordinary season culture in local adaptability test for three years from 1999 to 2001. 'Baegjinju' is highly adaptable to central and southern plain areas of Korea.
