Chemical composition, forage prodaction and succession of the rang plants in Um Elgura area, Sudan

The study was conducted in Elmegaid and Elbuwaida natural ranges, Urn Elgura area, Butana steppes, Gezira state, Sudan, during 2000 and 2001 rainy seasons. Its objectives were determination of the range components, their chemical composition, yielding ability and succession. More than 30 species were identified. Their crude protein percentages ranged from 3.0% to 18.7% with Aristida adscensions (Humra, Gaw) and Brachiaria eruciformis (Urn Kewiat) showed the lowest limit and Tephrosia appollinea (Umrigayga) and Ipomoea cordofana (Tabar) depicted the upper range limit. Humra showed the highest crude fibre content (54.7%) while Sonchus cornutus (Moleita) gave the lowest content (24.3%). In both locations, the total fresh weight was higher in season 2000 (with a range of 2450-5691 kg/ha) than that of 2001 (with a range of 84-2553 kg/ha) due to the variation in the amount and frequency of per annum precipitation. Sorghum arundinaceum (Adar) and Tabar were the tallest plants in both rainy seasons and locations. The total number of plants/ha at Elmegaid (season 2000) ranged from 334000 to 406000 and from 82000 to 203000 in season 2001. In Elbuwadia, the range of the plant density was 217000-407000 plants/ha in 2000 and 99000-195000 plants/ha in 2001. Elmegaid range was dominated mainly by Tabar, Urn Kewiat and Kurmoshaiba (Chloris virgala) but the time of their domination was different. Elbuwaida range was fully dominated by Adar with its lowest frequency (66.5%) in September and highest frequency (84.3%) in late October
