Comparison between rumen fermentation characteristies due to intake of cotton crop residues, sorghum crop residues, autumn pasture and casual grazing

An experiment was conducted to compare the effects of cotton crop re¬sidue, sorghum crop residue, autumn pasture and casual grazing on rumen fermentation characteristics, at the Rahad Agricultural Corporation (RAC). Eight ewes were randomly selected from 81 Sudanese desert ewes. Blood samples for volatile fatty acids (VFA) and rumen fluid samples for rumen fluid pH, ammonia (NH3) and total protozoal count were taken weekly from these 8 selected animals. The study revealed that when the animals fed on cotton crop residues, the rumen pH, NH3, total protozoal number and the molar proportion of acetate were significantly (p 0.05) higher than when they fed on other treatments. Generally, the study showed that there is a trend of increasing rumen acetate with fibrous feed intake, i.e., cotton and sorghum crop residues
