Methods, advantages and drawbacks of classification of contaminated soils are assessed for the Czech and Slovak classification system and for the WRB. For the classification of contaminated soils is necessary to define: a) level and unit in a classification system, b) concept of contamination for the purpose of classification, i.e. what is the contaminated soil, what kind of criteria to use, thickness of horizons etc. Based on analysis of these two points rules for classification of contaminated soils in the Taxonomie classification system of the CR are proposed: i) the taxonomy unit for identification of contamination should be ordered on the level of variety; ii) the variety contaminated should be available for all main units (soil types); iii) criteria for classification as variety contaminated should be exceeding of such level of toxic substances content in soil which could cause serious health or ecological risks (trigger or indication level). Using the definition of contaminated sites according to the Soil Thematic Strategy a basic criteria for soil classification into the variety contaminated are proposed in the contribution.
