Chitosan-starch blend films containing carvacrol-loaded chitosan nanoparticles were prepared by a casting method. The content of carvacrol-loaded chitosan nanoparticles was varied as 6.6 percent , 13.2 percent and 26.4 percent w/w. The incorporation of carvacrol-loaded chitosan nanoparticles did not affect tensile strength of the films, but reduced film rigidity about 5-25 percent and improved film extensibility about 20-125 percent. The loading of carvacrol-loaded chitosan nanoparticles with a content of 6.6 percent w/w improved water and oxygen barrier properties about 15 percent. Nevertheless, the barrier properties of the films became inferior when carvacrol-loaded chitosan nanoparticles contents of 13.2 percent and 26.4 percent w/w were used. Chitosan-starch blend films containing carvacrol-loaded chitosan nanoparticles showed higher growth inhibitory against S. aureus, B. cereus and E. coli than the film containing free carvacrol. In addition, the growth inhibitory efficiency of the films against Gram-positive bacteria was greater than that of the films against Gram-negative bacterium.
