Ethanol extract of chayote (Sechium edule) fruit at the doses of 200, 400, 800 and 1,200 mg/kg bw per oral were evaluated for their gastroprotective effect on various gastric ulcer models, such as swimming stress, absolute alcohol and indomethacin-induced ulcers in male Wistar rats. The extract proved to be active reducing lesions-induced by absolute alcohol, swimming stress and indomethacin at the dose of 200, 400 and 800 mg/kg bw, respectively. The extract at the dose of 1,200 mg/kg bw exhibited significant decrease Ulcer Index that were induced by swimming stress, absolute alcohol and indomethacin as compared to the control group by 7.84, 6.45 and 4.47 times, respectively and also produced 87.25+-6.75, 83.76+-9.26 and 77.84+-9.11 percent protection on these models, respectively, with nearly potency as cimetidine. These results indicated the potential gastroprotective effect of the chayote fruit extract.
