Dendrobium production responses to saran house microclimate environment

Hybrid Dendrobium flower has been a one of the worldwide popular tropical cut flowers. Generally, the spike production fluctuates all year round with unsynchronized to market demands during some periods of the year. The flowering pattern is irregular and unpredictable occasionally due to annual climate changes. To understand the correlations of environmental factors and the spike production, the microclimate under saran house at Kamphaeng Saen, Nakhon Pathom (14 deg N, 100 deg E) in which two-year-old Dendrobium Sonia 'Earsakul' was grown and monitored throughout the year. The data revealed that the highest production peak was between July and August and the lowest in December. These associated with the harvest month temperature (r = 0.657) and irradiance 2 months before harvest (r = 0.686). The spike qualities such as spike length, the number of floret per spike and floret size, correlated to night temperature at harvest month and vase life also correlated with total non-structural carbohydrate (TNC) in the spike (r = 0.749). The results suggested that temperature was a key factor determining the quantity and quality of Dendrobium's spike production.
