Effect of dietary sodium bicarbonate and ascorbic acid supplementations on the performance of growing Japanese quail during hot climatic conditions
2012
Al-Hanafy, L.A.
A total number of 468 unsexed seven days old Japanese quail chicks were used to ýinvestigate the effect of dietary sodium bicarbonate and ascorbic acid under two stocking ýdensities during hot summer conditions. Chicks were distributed into 8 treatment groups. ýA 2 X 4 factorial design arrangement were preformed included two stoking densities (125 ýor 200 em2ýþ. ý/bird) and four dietary supplementations (without supplementation as ýcontrol, 1.0 g/kg diet sodium bicarbonate, 1200 mg/kg diet ascorbic acid and 1.0 g ýsodium bicarbonate + 1200 mg ascorbic acid/kg diet) during the growing period (7-42 ýdays of age). The obtained results indicated that increasing stocking density from 200 ýcm2/bird to 125 cm2/bird caused a significant (P 0.05 or 0.01) decrease in live body ýweight at 42 days of age and body weight gain and feed conversion during 21-42 and 7-ýý42 days of age as well as, pre-slaughter weight (from 233.17 to 226.49) and a significant ýý(P:≤0.05) increase in wing temperature (from 41.24 to 41.40°C) during 7-21 days of age. ýSodium bicarbonate caused a significant (P≤:0.01) increase in body weight at 42 days of ýage, body weight gain during 7-42 days of age, feed intake during 7-21 days of age and ýpre-slaughter weight. Ascorbic acid or its combination with sodium bicarbonate ýsignificantly (P:≤0.01) increased body weight at 21 and 42 days of age, body weight gain ýduring 7-21 and 7-42 days of age, feed intake during 7-21 days of age and pre-slaughter ýweight as well as significantly (P:≤0.05 or 0.01) reduced wing temperature from 7-21 and ýý21-42 days of age. In conclusion, the best performance of Japanese quail could be ýobtained by supplements 1.0 g sodium bicarbonate plus 1200 mg ascorbic acid under low ýdensity (200 cm. bird).ý
