A study on a farmers sample using the intercropping of cotton on wheat in some villages at Monofia Governorate

The research aims at identifying the crop patterns of farmers applying the intercropping system and their knowledge towards the the following issues: the socio-economic and environmental impacts of the intercropping system, consideration to be taken into account in applyng the intercropping system, the degree of knowledge and implementation of the intercropping of cottton on wheat,th e identification of the significant correlatlon between the farmers characteristics using the intercroppmd and the results of these impacts, The research was conducted in three villages in Al Shohadaa district at the level of Monofia Governorate on a sample of 75 researched farmers using the intercropping system of cotton on wheat, The data was collected by using a special questionnaire, which included several parts to cover the required research objectives and hypotheses; data Was collected during the months of May and June 2010 through personal interview with the researched farmers at the villages' level, The collected data has been and analyzed statistically by using exclusively numerical table, rercentages and labulated sicharample correlation coefficient of Pearson, learch Results: . The studied farmers were cteristic by the following: young, high educated, low number of family members, large size of agricultural holdings, good rdationship with the change agents and sources of information, and a positive attitude toward new ideas; . The most important sources of information were: friends,neighbors, farmers, agricultural extension agent, and the director of the agricultural cooperative, in addition to agricultura1 magazines; . The most important socio-economic impacts of the intercropping system were presented by the increasing of productivity per unit area of land, and the income distribution throughout the year. The most important environmental impacts were characterized the j reduction of pest diseases, and the overcome of the poor growing conditions; The increase of the studied fam1ers' knowledge towards the benefits of intercropping of cotton on wheat which include: seeds provision, irrigation water, early cultivation of both crops, and increase the farmers' income;.
