Adult rats had lipids removed from hair by bathing them in equal volumes of ethanol and ether, allowing 7 days for the process. Three experiments were with entire or castrated males and females or entire rats given sex hormones. When fed to appetite males had more hair lipids than females. Fatty acids differed between sexes. Restriction of feed reduced weight of seminal vesicles and hair lipids in males, but castration reduced sebaceous excretion by 59% and then there was no response to restriction of feed. A supplement of testosterone gave normal weight of seminal vesicles and hair lipids.In females the restriction of feed reduced weight of uterus and increased hair lipids. Spaying tended to reduce hair lipids. When weight of uterus was restored by giving oestradiol hair lipids did not return to normal. Restriction of feed caused greater changes in fatty acids in males than in females. Testosterone clearly seemed to play a role in sebaceous secretion and the effect of undernutrition in males, but in females the role of oestrogens needs more investigation.
