Evaluation of winter safflower spine lines for oil and seed yield under rain-fed condition of cold temperate regions of Iran.

To evaluate the agronomic characteristics of 20 safflower spine genotypes, a field experiment was conducted based on randomized complete block design with three replications under rainfed conditions in fall planting at the Sararood-Kermanshah, Shirvan chardavol-Ilam and Shirvan- Khorasan stations during 2008-2009. Simple analyses of variance in all locations were done for agronomic traits seperately. Combined analysis of variance was performed assuming genotype effect as fixed, locations effect as random factor. The results of combined analysis of variance showed that there were significant differences (P0.01) among simple and interaction effects for seed yield. The genotype "e location interaction was not significant for seed oil percent. The highest seed oil content (more of 28%) was produced by PI 304408. Seed yield in Shirvan chardavol-Ilam was more than those in other locations. Seed yield was significantly positively correlated with seed per head (P 0.01) in Sararood- Kermanshah, and head per plant (P 0.01) and seed per head (P 0.05) in Shirvan chardavol-Ilam. These correlations were not significant in Shirvan- Khorasan station. Yield stability analysis was done for safflower spine genotypes by Ranking method, Lin and Binns procedure, and GGL biplot method. The results of these methods proved that high yield genotype PI 613394 (930 Kg/ha) was stable.
