The assessment of winter wheat varieties were carried out at the State Stende Cereal Breeding Institute in the time period of 2011-2013. Cereal breeding trials included conventional crop rotation. The average yield level was 5.76 t ha E-1 – 9.03 t haE-1. The highest yield level was showed by the varieties ‘Skagen’, ‘Juliuss’ and ‘Altos’, but the lowest – by ‘Fredis’ and ‘Zentos’. The application of the range method showed that the varieties ‘Juliuss’, ‘Talsis’ and ‘Skagen’ had the highest and most stable yield. The levels of winter hardiness differed among the varieties. The varieties ‘Frontal’ and ‘Zentos’ were mostly influenced by unfavourable meteorological conditions during winter/early spring period. The highest winter hardiness level was showed by the varieties ‘Edvins’ and ‘Fredis’. High lodging resistance was characteristic of the varieties ‘Olivin’ and ‘Fredis’, but the lowest – of the variety ‘Zentos’. The data of grain quality showed that on average, for the period of three years all varieties were suitable for food, except for the variety ‘SW Magnifik’.
