Genetic diversity for seed dormancy in Aegilops species collections of Gene bank
1982
Shafaodin, S | Vojdany, P
To evaluate the effect of storage time and temperature on seed dormancy in Aegilops species, 24 Accessions from Ae. tauschii, Ae. crassa, Ae. cylindrical and Ae. triuncialis species were selected. Accessions were regenerated in the farm and regenerated seeds were used for evaluation. The new seeds were placed in aluminum bags at 5, 10, 15, 20 degrees centigrade and laboratory temp for 9 weeks. Each week a sample of each treatment was germinated on filter paper in the laboratory temperature and germination in each treatment were measured. The results showed significantly different between evaluated species for seed dormancy. Storage temperature and storage time of the samples also had a significant effect on the seed dormancy of samples. A significant interaction was observed between storage temperature and storage duration. According to temperature treatments; 10 degrees was best temperature to break dormancy in the sample. Among the species understudy, Ae. cylindrica showed the lowest intensity of dormancy, As after 8 weeks of storage at 15 ° C temperature showed 80% germination. In contrast Ae. crassa showed the highest intensity of dormancy. As it does not changed it's germination during the treatments. The results also indicate that there is an inverse relationship between the length of the storage period and storage temperature. Finally great increases in seed germination observed in seeds were kept for at least 8 weeks in the laboratory temperature
