Fumonisin, FB 1, is a kind of mycotoxin elaborated from Fusarium moniliforme. Results of a prevalence survey in Taiwan by our laboratory showed that there were forty percent contamination rate in domestic animal feeds, and the average contamination level was 4.5ppm. A total of 96 birds were alloted into four treatments, including control, FB1 5 ppm, 10 ppm, and 15 ppm in a 3-week feeding experiment. The results showed that growth performance was not influenced by FB1 challenge, but relative bursa weight was decreased significantly elevated. When broilers were stimulated with lipopolysaccharides for 0, 3, 6 hr by the intraperitoneal injection route as controls, cytokine gene expressions of IL-1 beta, IL-2, IFN-alpha, IFN- gamma, and iNOS as monitored by semi-quantitative RT-PCR showed that cytokine mRNA expressions levels had similar patterns which reached a plateau at 3 hr, and declined at 6 hr. Similarly with high and low levels of FB 1 challenge for three weeks in broilers, the results also revealed different extent of inhibition of cytokine mRNA expressions. All together, our results suggest that FB1 up to 15 ppm did not affect the growth performance, but, impaired some blood biochemistry parameter and the immunocompetence in broilers.
