Palm fats for livestock feeding
2004
Palmquist, D.L.
Palm oil and it`s by products are among the most abundant vegetable oil sources in the world. Use in animal feeds is considerable and shows great potential to be increased. Though use of PFAD for calcium salts in dairy supplements may be considered to be a mature market, its use continues to expand. This may be accelerated by the aversion of the general public to using animal fats as feed ingredients, as a result of the BSE epidemic. Palm oil and PFAD probably will be used only in relatively small amounts, in blends with more unsaturated vegetable oils, as supplements for pigs and poultry. However, great opportunity for expansion into the fish feed market has been demonstrated, due to tight supplies of fish oil and to research that has shown that up to 50% of the oil in fish feeds can be supplied from PFAD or CPO without compromising growth or quality. Further, oxidative stability of fish muscle is improved. Opportunities for palm oil products in the pet food market remain to be explored.
