The effects of Gliricidia maculata and Leucocephala supplementation on dry matter intake, nutrient digestion, nitrogen balance and weight gain of goats were evaluated. Native grass (predominated by star grass) as basal diet was offered alone (control) or supplemented with Gliricidia, Leucaena and a mixture of Gliricidia and Leucaena. The results showed that, although not significantly different, total DM intake tended to be higher in goats offered diets supplemented with Leucaena or a mixture of Gliricidia and Leucaena when compared with the control (326 v 298 g/d). Supplementation increase digestibility of crude protein and crude fiber with the highest values noted for a mixture of Gliricidia and Leucaena (p less than 0.05), but digestibility of NDF was lower in goats supplemented with Gliricidia alone (p less than 0.05). A mixture of Gliricidia and Leucaena resulted in higher nitrogen balance and live-weight gain when compared with the other diets. It can be concluded that native grass is better utilized by goats when supplemented with a mixture of Gliricidia and Leucaena.
