Effects of halogenated coumpounds with and without organic acids or unsaturated fatty acids on in vitro methane production.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of combination of one of halogenated coumpounds and either organic acids or fatty acids on in vitro methane production and fermentative characteristics of mixed rumen microorganisms. Ruminal fluid was collected from a Holstein steer on the mixture of tall fescue and concentrate, and incubated at 39 degree celcius for 48 h with addition of those materials. Lower concentration of methane and lower A:P ratio were observed with PMDI compared with BES (P less than 0.01). However, no further reduction in methane production was obtained by the addition of organic acids unsaturated fatty acids. In general medium pH, VFA, total gas and hydrogen production, and matter degradability were affected by addition of the same coumpounds. In addition, PMDI+malate treatment resulted in the highest molar proportion of propionate, and lowest A:P ratio and methane production (P less than 0.01). Hydrogen production was highest in PMDI+linolenic acid and lowest in BES+malate treatment (P less than 0.01). PMDI+malate combination was the most recommendable in reducing methane production under conditions of present studies.
