A study on the effects of improved nutrition and management system toward better milk production and fertility in a commercial dairy herd in Malaysia

The Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) adopted the MS ISO 9000:1994 quality management system for its farms in 1998 to enhance organisational efficiency and effectiveness. One of the dairy farms, Livestock Centre (PTH) Air Hitam adopted a change in nutrition and farm management system as part of the quality improvement initiatives which resulted in significant improvements in milk production and fertility performance of the dairy herd in the farm. The PTH Air Hitam was awarded the MS ISO 9000:2004 certification in Production of Ruminant Genetic Products from the Malaysian Administrative Modernization and Management Planning Unit (MAMPU) in March 2000. There was a significant improvement in milk production after the introduction of changes in 1998 from 7.2 kg/d/cow in 1999 to 8.5 kg/d/cow in 2001. Herd fertility expressed as claving to conception interval also improved from 166d to 103d over the same period.
