Pathogenic E. coli can cause diseases such as hemorrhagic colitis and hemolytic uremic syndrome in humans. Shiga Toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) can be found in the faeces of domestic animals especially ruminants such as cattle, sheep and goats, but most of these animals are healthy and without any clinical signs ofthe disease. They are considered to be the reservoirs of pathogenic E. coli. One hundred fifty two rectal swabs were collected from healthy goats from four farms in the state of Selangor. One hundred and thirty eight (91%) of the faecal samples were positive for E. coli on culture but on serology with polyvalent antisera groups 1-8 (Denka Seiken) for pathogenic E. coli, 16 isolates tested positive. Nine of the 16 isolates (57%) were positive for the virulent genes stx1 and stx2 by multiplex PCR (m-PCR) of which one isolate carried both sx1 and stx2 genes while 8 isolates carried only the stx1 gene. These isolates were identified as STEC E. coli.
