The nutritive value of seven grasses harvested in North Sumatra during dry and rainy seasons was evaluated. The results showed that in vitro dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM) and crude protein (CP) degradation, the extent and rate of gas production, and metabolizable energy (ME) concentration varied among the species and season. Within the species, the differences among the dry and rainy seasons were significant (p less than 0.05), especially for A. compressus, B. decumbens, C. plectostachyus and P. purpureum. Although no significant defference was noted, the mean values of the observed variables from seven grasses tended to be higher in rainy season compared with dry season. It could be concluded that grass harvested in rainy season had better nutritive value compared with dry season.
