The study aimed to describe the changes in the density of thecal microvasculature during ovarian follicular atresia in the swamp buffalo. Ovaries of Philippine swamp buffaloes (SB), crossbreds (SB x Murrah buffaloCB) and Holstein-Friesian cows (HF) were collected from slaughterhouse, fixed in 10% formalin in PBS and embedded in paraffin. Tissue sections were stained with Bandeiraea simplicifolia-I lectin (BS-I) to visualize the endothelial cells of blood vessels. In the theca interna, healthy follicle in SB had significantly lower density of microvessel number than other breeds and follicular types. From healthy to early atretic follicle theca interna in all breeds showed a significant decrease in the density of microvessel area. In the advanced atresia, microvessel area density significantly increased (but lower than in healthy follicles) and declined again in the late atretic follicle (higher than in early atresia and lower than in healthy follicles) was noted in SB but not in CB and HF. These results suggest that there are dynamic changes occurring in the thecal microvasculature of SB during follicular atresia which are different from CB and HF.
