Data for litter traits comprised of total born (TB) number born alive (NBA) number weaned (NW) and birth weight (BW) were recorded during January 1996 to December 2001 from 50 Large White sows and 854 Landrace sows belonged to a private swine breeding company in Thailand. The first parity information of the above mentioned traits were analyzed by REML with and without maternal genetic effects for model comparisons in animal models. The result suggested that maternal genetic effects were not important in determining the variability in those traits. It seemed to be sufficient in running a model without maternal genetic components.
