Assessing and monitoring of peat swamp forest changes in Selangor using landsat TM satellite imagery

In recent years, the rate of development related to agriculture and urbanization in the state of Selangor has accelerated tremendously in recent years, with a corresponding escalation in the rate of depletion of the forest areas including the peat swamp forest (PSF). This trend has given rise to fears of impending depletion of PSF and considerable concern for environmental stability and quality. Under these circumstances, the need for conservation and effective management of PSF in Selangor is imperative and cannot be over emphasized. One fundamental set of tools crucial in monitoring and managing PSF cover changes is the data provided by the satellite remote sensing. This study was undertaken to monitor PSF cover changes in the State of Selangor using remote sensing technology. Detection of PSF cover was performed using multi-temporal LANDSAT data taken 1993 and 1996, with the support of existing land use/cover, topographic and forest resource maps. The data were initially analysed using Normalized Differences Vegetation Index (NDVI) in order to obtain a preliminary scenario of the change in the PSF cover. The data were then classified using a Maximum Likelihood Classifier (MLC) and overlaid to generate PSF cover change. The study mapped and quantified that there was a loss of PSF in Selangor at a rate of 655.2 ha (0.87%) with a mean overall accuracy of 77.7%. Factors causing "PSF depletion include the conversion of 404.7 ha of Kuala Langat Forest Reserve for abongine settlement and logging of 218 ha, of commercial species such as Shorea uitginosa (Meranti Bakau), Koompasia (Kempas), Gonystylus bacanus (Ramin Melawis), Anisoptera marginata (Mersawa Paya) and Dactyodese incut-vata (Kedondong Senggeh) in Raja Musa Forest Reserve"
