An integrated biophysical-GIS model for the evaluation of environmental N pollution from intensive pig production

Large amounts of manure from intensive pig production areas are being excreted daily and are left settling in ponds where their overflow contaminates rivers. Alternatively, the excess manure could be applied as an organic fertiliser source in neighbouring cropping or perennial systems. The aim is to develop a novel model to evaluate nutrient emission scenarios and the impact of livestock waste at the landscape or regional level in the humid tropics. The study will link and improve existing models to evaluate emissions of N to the atmosphere, and leaching of nutrients to groundwater and surface waters. The simulation outputs of the model will be integrated with a GIS spatial analysis to assess the distribution of nutrient emissions, leaching and appropriate manure application on neighbouring crop lands, and as an information and decision support tool for the relevant users.
