2001
Choo, C.Y. | Nah, B.K. | Ibrahim, P | Chan, K.L.
The hexane, chloroform, n-butanol and aqueous exrtracts derived from a methanolic-soluble residue of Eurycoma longifolia, Jack were evaluated for antimicrobial activities using the agar diffusion method. The organisms tested were Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albicans. The results obtained showed that only the hexane and chloroform extracts were active especially against B. cereus. Through bioactivity-guided fractionation of the chloroform extract, 9-methoxycanthin-6-one was isolated, whose structure was confirmed by IR, MS and NMR spectroscopies. The compound was produced a minimum inhibitory concentration of 9 microgram mL-1 against B. cereus following the broth dilution method. Two quassinoids (eurycomalactone and 14,15 beta-dihydroxyklaineanone) which were concurrently isolated with the alkaloid displayed no activity against B. cereus.
