Milk production and energy balance in Holstein crossbred cows fed with rice straw or corn silage in northeast Thailand

Five Holstein crossbred cows in mid-lactation were used to investigate the effects of rice straw and corn silage as roughage sources on milk production and energy balance. The feed consumed by the cows consisted of 35% corn silage and 65% basal concentrate (CS) or of 30% rice straw and 70% basal concentrate plus soybean meal (RS+SBM). The total dry matter intake was similar between RS+SBM and CS cows. The milk yield of CS cows was higher than that of RS+SBM cows, but the FCM yield did not differ because milk fat content tended to decrease in CS cows. Gross energy intake and energy losses in feces, urine and heat production did not differ between RS+SBM and CS cows. The methane level of CS cows tended to be lower than that of RS+SBM cows. The milk energy output of CS cows was higher than that of RS+SBM cows. The energy balance (milk energy output + retained energy) of CS cows tended to be higher than that of RS+SBM cows. The efficiency of ME for maintenance and production (mean: 0.66) was not different between RS+SBM and CS cows. The ME requirement for the maintenance of all cows was estimated to be 463 KJ/BW. Corn silage can be used as a high-energy diet source for lactating cows if an appropriate amount of fiber is supplemented.
