Exploring the flowering behavior of NSIC Rc204H (Mestiso 20) parent lines for optimum synchronization and high seed yield

NSIC Rc204H (Mestiso 20) is a two-line hybrid rice variety developed by the Philippines Rice Research Institute and the University of the Philippines Los Banos. In order to achieve high seed yield in the hybrid seed production of Mestiso 20, the protocol for seeding interval of its parent lines should be meticulously studied. In 2011 wet season, the team of PhilRice, Isabela initiated an experiment to observe the flowering behavior of the S and P-lines of Mestiso 20 in order to determine the best seeding interval of the parents and achieve perfect synchronization at flowering stage. Observations on 10 plants each of S- and P-lines include days from heading to flowering, flowering duration and flowering dynamics of a single panicle and plant. Based on observations, P-lines flower ahead while the S-lines flower 7 days later but the number of days from heading to flowering of S-lines is 1.8 days while 0.5 day for P-lines. Thus, it is recommended that P-lines should be seeded 5 days after seeding of S-lines to attain flowering synchronization. It is observed that the length of flowering of P-lines is longer than S-lines. Hence, additional spraying of GA3 to the S-lines is recommended to increase receptivity period of their stigma. Floret opening for the male parent is from 9am to 12pm while female florets open at 8am to 5 pm. It is recommended to remove dew out of S-line panicles before 8 am, this enables temperature around the panicle to increase and early opening of florets could be enhanced. Peak of floret opening for both parents is from 3rd to 5th day from start of flowering with temperature ranging from 28.5 to 30.3 deg C. Thus supplementary pollination should be more thorough from the 3rd to 5th day of flowering of the parent lines.
