Reaction of rice genotypes on the natural occurrence of rice blast (Pyricularia oryzae Cavara) in Cabanglasan, Bukidnon (Philippines)

Rice blast disease caused by Pyricularia oryzae Cavara was confirmed to be present and currently infecting different rice varieties cultivated in Cabanglasan, Bukidnon. Data obtained show that regardless of growth stages and variety planted, the disease incidence and severity is high. At tillering stage, NSIC Rc146 recorded the highest percentage of leaf blast incidence and percentage leaf blast severity of 100% and 77.22%, respectively. While after heading, NSIC Rc158 obtained the highest incidence of leaf blast, neck blast and leaf severity percentages. Moderately positive correlation (r=0.6332) trend was achieved on the association between leaf blast incidence and leaf blast severity on tillering stage. Furthermore, moderately positive (r=0.7081) correlation was obtained on percentage neck blast incidence and leaf blast severity. Moderately positive correlation (r=0.5318) was also achieved between neck and leaf blast incidence. Direct seeding is commonly practiced by farmers as method of crop establishment and the rice fields sampled belong to rainfed-lowland rice ecosystem. With the high disease incidence and severity pressuring the different varieties being cultivated; proper selection of genotypes to be deployed will be an essential tool in managing the disease, coupled with improvement in current integrated management practices of the farmers within the locality.
