Crop performance under aerobic and flooded soil conditions of selected rice genotypes

Rice cultivation in the conventional way requires a lot of water. However, water is becoming scarce especially for agricultural use. An alarming rate of ground water depletion has been reported and thus, several water savings methods have been developed. To complement the water saving techniques, it is important to understand crop performance grown under aerobic and flooded soil conditions to optimize rice production in the future. Four contrasting rice genotypes (IR72, NSIC RC222, SACG7 and Mestiso 7) were grown in a greenhouse at the International Rice Research Institute in May 2011 using both a 6.5 L and 13 L buckets grown either aerobic or flooded soil conditions. This study aimed to determine the effect of soil water conditions, genotypes and soil volume on heading time, leaf development, tiller number and biomass at heading. The aerobic soil condition delayed heading time while soil volume had no effect. Significant differences were observed in the number of leaves produced from the main tiller of the different genotypes used. The total leaf number appeared more in IR72 and NSIC Rc222, while plants grown under aerobic soil conditions have significantly lower leaf number was similar in both small and big buckets, but the tiller number, shoot biomass and root biomass were significantly lower in the smaller bucket. Shoot biomass at heading was similar in plants grown in aerobic and flooded but root biomass was higher in plants under flooded conditions.
