Growth and yield of bush snap bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) mixed with Benguet pine wood strips during seed storage

Seeds of four bush snap bean varieties namely Sablan, Bokod, Hab 19 and Green Crop were mixed with different amounts of Benguet pine wood strips (BPWS) i.e. 0, 12.5, 25.0 and 50 g/kg of seeds during storage to evaluate weevil infestation; to identify the best variety of bush snap bean mixed with BPWS in terms of growth and yield; to determine the best amount of BPWS to a kg of bush snap bean. After five months of seed storage, there was no weevil infestation found in all the treatments considered in this study. Total weight lost over five months of storage was also comparable among treatments. The four varieties differed significantly in percent emergence, initial and final plant height, number of seeds per pod, pod length and width, and marketable, non-marketable, and total fresh pod yield. They also showed moderate resistance to pod borer and bean rust. Mixing BPWS to a kg seeds significantly increased percent emergence, initial plant height and marketable and total fresh pod yield and return on cash expense. The variety and BPWS had no significant interaction effect in all the parameters measured except for initial plant height where moderate interaction effect was noted. Growing Hab 19, Bokod and Sablan varieties of bush snap bean and mixing at least 12.5 g of BPWS/kg of seeds during storage could be recommended for a more successful and profitable bush snap bean farming.
