2013
Quicoy, C.B.
The general objective of the paper is to compare the profitability of eggplant production and the potential impact of Bt Eggplant on Farmers' income in selected provinces of the Philippines. It also determined the level of inputs of utilization among eggplant farmers in study areas; measure the technical efficiency level and determined the major factors affecting productivity and technical efficiency of eggplant farm; as well as the potential impact of Bt eggplant on farmers' income. Simple descriptive statistics as well as costs and returns analysis were used to determine the profitability of eggplant production. Stochastic frontier production function was used to determine the factors affecting the productivity and efficiency of eggplant production while partial budgeting and net present value of net benefits were used to determine the potential impact of adopting Bt eggplant. The analysis shows that farmer respondents generated an average net farm income of PhP 379,046 per hectare during the 2011 production season. The results of the stochastic frontier production function analysis revealed the labor, seeds and cost of pesticide used in eggplant production were the most important factors affecting the productivity of eggplant farms. Significant factors that were found to affect technical inefficiency of the sample eggplant farmers were age, educational attainment, gender, farm experience of the respondents, credit, distance of the farm from the nearest input supplier, knowledge of eggplant fruit and shoot borer (EFSB), and the method of pest control. The results of the analysis also revealed that adoption of Bt eggplant can increase the income of eggplant growers.
