Identification of best location for TGMS hybrid seed production in Mindanao [Philippines]
2013

Hybrid seed production can be achieved either through the use of cytoplasmic male sterility system (CMS) or the thermo-genetic sterility system (TGMS). Although the CMS is considered the most effective system, it is too cumbersome. In TGMS, there is no need for the restorer and the maintainer genes but requires a 40 sq m control plot to check the degree of selfing in the SxP plot. In 2009, two TGMS hybrids, NSIC Rc202H (Mestiso 19) and 204H (Mestiso 20) were released by PhilRice, however, no commercial seed production was conducted except for small trials in PhilRice-Los Baños where the standard protocol was developed. In WS [wet season] 2011, several one-ha SxP seed production trials were tried in different provinces of Visayas and Mindanao with promising results. This study focused on the SxP seed production trials in Mindanao in DS/WS 2012. One hectare SxP seed Production of Mestiso 19 was tried in 3 provinces of Davao, South Cotabato, Bukidnon, Agusan, and Midsayap, North Cotabato. Results of the trials in DS 2012 showed that SxP seed production in Bukidnon and Davao del Sur was not possible due low temperature experienced during sensitive stages of panicle development. The SxP seed production in areas with high altitude like Bukidnon during dry season is not recommended. There was high degree of selfing noted in the control plot. SxP seed production in Midsayap and Agusan resulted in low seed yield due high occurrence of stemborer in Midsayap and high rainfall in Agusan, respectively. The best locations for SxP seed production of Mestiso 19 both in DS/WS were Davao del Norte and Davao Oriental. Seed yield of more than 1000 kg was attained in both locations with less than 50 gm yield in the control plot.
