NOMIARC evaluated several varieties of upland rice for seed production suited for some of the best adoptable varieties and location specific technology. Among the varieties tested in the area for seed production were NSIC RC9, Denorado and Domodaw. These varieties were planted at a planting distance of 35 x 50 cm between rows and hills following protocol for upland rice used production developed by the station using hill method of planting. Results revealed that variety Domodaw is the tallest variety with 139.95 cm plant height. Its height made it prone to lodging especially during strong winds or heavy rains with 50% damaged. Denorado obtained the height of 119.00 cm and slightly susceptible to lodging with 20% of the crops damage and NSIC RC9 with only 82.98 cm height. On the number of tillers Denorado had 19 tillers, NSIC RC9 showed 18 tillers, and Domodaw gave 14. In terms of maturity, Domodaw had 124 days, NSIC RC9 took 127 DAS and Denorado reached 132 DAS. Highest yield was obtained by NSIC RC9 with 4.06 tons/ha followed by Domodaw with 3.35 tons/ha while Denorado gave a yield of 3.10 tons/ha. Throughout the cropping season some problems were encountered especially on pest infestation but all this was manageable. In order to promote the performance of these varieties, a package of technology was developed in the station to disseminate to all rice cultivating farmers in the region and neighboring regions.
