The project, 'improvement of sweet potato production technology in the Philippine Highlands' was done in 2003 to 2006. Subsequently, the improved technologies were piloted and demonstrated in farmers' field to enhance the transfer and uptake of the potential technologies. In addition, farmers' field school and hands-on trainings were also done in farmer's field and on-station. These activities had quickly linked farmers to the improved technology on the quality seed potato production and had strengthened networking with the farmers, researchers and some associations/cooperatives having the same interest of improving the quality, quantity and timely availability of potential potato germplasm in the Philippine Highlands. In 2007 to present, technologies are being commercialized on-station (NPRCRTC) and at farmers' seed association/cooperatives and individual farmers. Technology assistance on quality seed potato production is continually extended to the farmers for a sustainable quality seed potato production. This project was supported by DA-BAR through the Northern Philippines Root Crops Research and Training Center (NPRCRTC) of Benguet State University (BSU). The BSU-NPRCRTC had served about 745 farmers from the use of potato quality planting materials, while 3 cooperatives/associations, 3 local government agencies and several farmer individuals are adaptors of the improved seed production technologies. As a consequence of the linkage between the farmers and BSU-NPRCRTC, an estimated 1,852.8 ha or 39.0% of the 4,854 ha planted to potato production in Benguet are of quality planting materials with improved average yield of 21 tons per hectare from 13 to 15 tons per hectare.
