Étude sur la faisabilité de certification MSC de la pêcherie de la palourde en Tunisie
2013
Nouaili, R.
The clam industry in Tunisia has attracted the interest of the government for its social significance as well as its economic contribution as a provider of an exportable product. Therefore, efforts have been directed towards the good management and development of this fishery, effected by the regulation of fishing activity, the institution of protective measures or the establishment of a monitoring committee. This work has as its objective a feasibility study for achieving MSC certification for this fishery according to the methodology based on the procedures and standards established by that body. A case has been proposed identifying the potential benefit and the unit of certification: the Zaboussa production zone. In the present case of the evaluation and with regard to the Principles and Criteria of the MSC, the three principles have achieved a rating of 80 and no performance indicator achieved less than 60, which is the minimum level required for certification. The chosen basis is therefore eligible for certification on condition that a plan is established to satisfy four conditions having as principal themes the research and investigation of the target space and the supervision and monitoring of fishing activity. Thus, it has been recommended that a detailed research programme should be put in place integrating all the components in keeping with the resources and interactions that govern the activity and environment of fishing. The competent authority shall make use of the results of this programme to refine its management strategy in order to be responsive to stock status and limiting reference values. Comparison with similar fisheries certified or in the process of MSC certification confirms the results obtained.
