Research Development and Commercialization of Subsurface Drip Irrigation

One of the main strategy for obviation hunger and poverty and is more efficient use of available water resources. For more efficient use of water different strategies s and methodology are suggested. However, two main methods for increasing water use efficiency and water productivity are increasing yield under saving water resources and saving level of yield under decreasing water use. Executive organizations in country are trying to develop pressurized irrigation system along the country every year to better use of water. Advance irrigation systems development is a proper strategy for improvement in water productivity and different plan and support system is developed for this development. Study and understanding of limitation and issue and also advantages of for use of advance irrigation systems could help the policy maker for development of most proper policy and development plans. Micro irrigation is one of advance irrigation systems which brig a high values of water productivity if develop properly. Subsurface drip irrigation (SDI) is one of micro irrigation systems which provide water under the soil surface for crops. Accordingly, water use efficiency is higher in SDI compared to surface drip irrigation which results higher economic for farmers. The SDI has higher efficiency compared to other irrigation system such as surface drip irrigation. However, SDI need better design operation and maintenance and will be changes where quail and quantity of soil and water resource faces limitations. In this report, advantges and disadvantages of SDI studied based on the national and international researches and reports. Research outputs on technical issue for development and commercialization of SDI presented. Commercialization of SDI need different stages development which need to be considered and here in technical, economical and applicability are important. Technical issues in this report are root extrusion in drippers, water quality, and salinity in soil, filtration, precisions irrigation and automation.
